2. Risk reduction
The Namibia Red Cross Society’s disaster risk reduction activities began implementation in 2006. The project aims at reducing the impact of natural hazards on targeted communities, through the enhancement of community resilience, knowledge sharing and disaster response. The goal of the project is to reduce the impact of natural hazards (floods, drought,) with particular focus on the most vulnerable groups like the San communities in Caprivi, Ohangwena and Otjozondjupa regions. Special focus is also extended to the population residing in the flood prone areas in the Caprivi region.
The project is expected to:
• Improve food security at household level of 6,000 San individuals in Tsumkwe district and Caprivi region.
• Increase knowledge in farming techniques among San communities
• Reduce loss of assets of 2000 individuals due to floods in Caprivi region
• Increase the capacity of NRCS’ disaster response team to be able to create a National Disaster Response Team (NDRT).
• Strengthen community early warning systems in Caprivi region on floods
The project will also facilitate profiling “lessons learnt” and working towards influencing policy/practice in disaster risk management. Sustainable livelihood framework forms a strong pillar of this project.

3. Tracing and restoring family links
Imagine, family scattered, children left alone without care, parents imprisoned, dead or whose fate is unknown -- this is but some of the suffering caused by armed conflicts, internal unrest and violence -- especially when communications break down. The NRCS can help you find your loved ones if you had been separated from them because of a conflict, such as a war. This activity is called tracing and restoring of family links.
For more than a century, when faced with such moral distress, the ICRC has been restoring hope to these families through the work of its thousands of staff member and National Societies volunteers.
The project aims to:
• Restore and maintain family ties
• Reunite separated families
• Find out what has happened to prisoners or missing persons
The project does this by:
• Establishing a Red Cross and Red Crescent communication network enabling separated family members to resume contact and correspond with each other
• Organizing, coordinating or facilitating the reunification of families across battle lines and national borders
• Issuing ICRC travel documents for people who do not or no longer have any identity papers as a result of conflict
• Collecting information on various categories of victims of armed conflicts, in order to assist them and inform their families of what has become of them
• Acting as a neutral intermediary between families and parties to conflict in order to find out what has happened to persons reported missing or whose family and friends have no news of them
