Namibia Red
Cross says Thanks for Giving
Gratitude is
a year-round theme at the Namibian Red Cross, an
organization that depends on generosity of donors of all
types from all walks of life to support its mission to
provide assistance wherever and whenever it is needed-
around the clock and around the world. Even so, the Red
Cross takes an opportunity at this time of the year to say
again thanks for giving to the thousand of contributors
across the country that support the organization. Due to the
extraordinary generosity of the public, the Namibia Red
Cross held a Flood of Applause Day on the 14 of November
2008 to its donors who contributed immensely to the flood
disaster that hit some parts of the country from January to
April this year.
The day was
witnessed by Mr. Gabriel Kangowa who represented the Right
Honorable Prime Minister Nahas Angula, Mrs Francoise Le
Goff Head of Southern Africa Zone based in Johannesburg,
Andimba Toivo Ya Toivo - Namibia Red Cross Chairman, Dr
Leake Hangala represented stakeholders, Head of different
organizations, Namibia Red Cross Secretary-General Ms Dorkas
Kapembe-Haiduwa as well as staff and volunteers of Red
Cross. On this day, the Red Cross had expressed a special
appreciation, acknowledges and recognizes its donors who
choose to support the organization while highlighting some
of the exceptional contributions that have been made to the
Red Cross early this year.
The Namibia
Red Cross would like to thank those businesses and
individuals that stepped up to help out during this
devastating time. Donors rushed to meet the needs of those
affected by the flood disaster, and because of their quick
and generous action, the Red Cross was able to meet
immediate needs of disaster victims by providing a safe
place to stay, warm meals and counseling. said Namibia Red
Cross Secretary-General Dorkas Kapembe-Haiduwa. We offer
our thanks not only for what has been given to us but for
what we have been able to give others because of the
generosity of those contributions.
Namibia
experienced heavy flooding in the North-East and North-West
areas of the country early this year affecting nearly 235
735 people. The extensive flooding continued for almost five
months, leaving thousands without shelter and food, since
even reserved and fresh crop was affected. Infrastructures
such as roads, bridges, clinics, school and businesses were
also affected. The flood adversely affected both man and
land displacing 65 000 people. The Namibia Red Cross and its
donors dispatched thousands of tents, blankets, mosquito
nets, water makers, jerry cans, bar soaps, plastic buckets,
kitchen sets, tarpaulins, shelter repair kits, clothes and
tons of food in the affected areas. In addition medicines
have also been distributed to cater for the needs of flood
affected areas.
According to
the Secretary-General, while the focus of its Flood of
Applause Day message is acknowledgement and recognition of
all contributors to the Red Cross, an equally important part
of being good stewards of those donated dollars is letting
the contributors know where, when and how their donations
have been used sharing them how they have made a
difference in someones life. This also further supports the
Red Cross commitment to transparency, particularly when it
comes to financial donations.
The Namibia Red Cross is committed to informing the public
when it has raised funds to cover the costs of any disaster
relief effort. The financial donation received was more than
2 million Namibian Dollars. The Namibia Red Cross shall
continue to count on its donors on their support and
tireless interventions as well as asks people who have not
yet given donations to start supporting the ongoing needs of
the Namibian people. In addition, the publics continued
support is essential to the Namibia Red Cross life saving
and first aid support to the Namibia people everyday.
